My AD called me to tell me he has a Deep Sea on his "incoming list" for me. This would be my second Rolex (first is a Bluesy Sub). It was definitely on my list along with a GMT, Yacht Master and Daytona (of course). Objectively there's nothing wrong with the watch - it's not like Rolex outsourced its construction to a Guatemalan sweatshop. I think most of the people who take issue with the DSSD were taken off guard by the degree of modification over the previous SD. The Deepsea has always been Rolex’s biggest and boldest dive watch (until the 50mm wide Deepsea Challenge 126067 came along that is, but we’ll ignore that for now). It takes the iconic design codes of the Submariner and beefs it up to 3,900m of water resistance.The new version of the Rolex Deepsea is engineered to shine into the ocean depths. The first Rolex deep-sea divers’ watch in 18 ct yellow gold, it is decked in blue and features an as-yet-unseen combination of materials: gold is paired with elements in ceramic and RLX titanium.
The Rolex Deepsea and Deepsea Challenge are ultra-resistant professional divers’ watches designed for deep-sea exploration. More on rolex.com. The standard Deepsea, which has been part of the Rolex lineup for over 15 years, can withstand the pressure of being over 2.4 miles deep. But Rolex has also made some exceptional watches–like the latest titanium Deepsea Challenge–that can handle being at the deepest point in the entire ocean (almost 7 miles). I’d try on a 44mm watch first with a 41mm alongside it. If your gut tells you the 44mm is too big then I’d pass on it. If you don’t mind it then I’d get the Deep Sea because of that dial. But if 41mm suits you better there are plenty of Submariners to choose from.
